Freshwater Fishing

Salmon

  • King salmon fishing at Ship Creek has been slow. A few fish are being caught each tide, but anglers have reported lots of jacks in the creek. Try fishing salmon roe behind a spin-and-glow during the incoming or outgoing tides for the last few days of the fishery.
  • Reminder: By Emergency Order, Ship Creek will close to all sport fishing, effective Saturday, June 29th and will remain closed until 12:01am Sunday, July 14th.
  • By Emergency Order, Campbell Creek will be closed to the retention of king salmon during the youth-only fishery, which takes place from 6:00am to 10:00pm on Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th. In addition, the use of bait is NOT allowed.
  • Reminder: The Campbell Creek youth-only fishery zone is from the Dimond Bridge to the Old Seward Highway. This section of Campbell Creek is only open to anglers 15 years of age and younger.

Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden/Arctic Char

  • Rainbow trout fishing on Campbell and Chester creeks has been good to excellent. Try casting small spinners or streamers in deep holes near Taku-Campbell Park, Arctic Boulevard, or Dowling Road.
  • Reminder: Both creeks are closed to all salmon fishing.

Local Lakes

  • Rainbow trout fishing has been excellent at Cheney and Taku-Campbell lakes in Anchorage and at Mirror Lake in Chugiak/Eagle River. Try slowly stripping wet flies or fishing bait under a bobber. With the warm weather, anglers have found better success during the mornings or evenings.
  • If you have a canoe or kayak, fishing Sand and Campbell Point lakes can be very productive for Arctic char and rainbow trout.
  • On July 1, Symphony Lake on the South Fork Eagle River Trail opens to sport fishing. Arctic Grayling fishing is expected to be excellent. Anglers that are willing to hike around the lake will find larger grayling. Small rainbow trout are also present in Symphony Lake. Try casting small nymph patterns and stripping them back to shore.

Special Species Information

Northern Pike

Northern pike are not native to Anchorage area lakes. Lower Fire Lake was treated for pike in the fall of 2022, and all pike were eradicated. If you catch a pike in any Anchorage area lake, do not release it and immediately report it here.
