Freshwater Fishing

Salmon

  • The first king salmon was caught late last week, and anglers had success over Memorial Day weekend. Fishing is off to a good start but will be slow this early in the run. Anglers are catching a few king salmon each day by casting spinners or soaking roe behind a spin-and-glow during the incoming and outgoing tides.

Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden/Arctic Char

  • Spawning closures are in place for Campbell and Chester creeks. Both creeks closed to all sport fishing on April 15 and will remain closed through June 14 to protect spawning rainbow trout.

Local Lakes

  • Most lakes in the Anchorage area have been stocked with rainbow trout in the last two weeks. Try slowly stripping a wet fly or fishing small bait under a bobber to catch these hungry rainbows.
  • Rainbow trout fishing has been excellent at Campbell Point, Cheney, and Taku-Campbell lakes.
  • If you have canoe or kayak, fishing the Eagle River/Chugiak area lakes such as Beach or Mirror can be very productive for catching rainbow trout.
  • Fishing on base? Areas on Elmendorf and north of the Glenn Highway need a Department of Defense identification card (DoD ID) or to be accompanied by a person possessing a DoD ID. Additionally, you need to register and obtain a permit through RecAccess.

Special Species Information

Northern Pike

Northern pike are not native to Anchorage area lakes. Lower Fire Lake was treated for pike in the fall of 2022, and all pike were eradicated. If you catch a pike in any Anchorage area lake, do not release it and immediately report it here.
