Freshwater Fishing

Salmon

  • King salmon fishing at Ship Creek has been fair. The snow melt and recent rain has brought the creek level up and reduced clarity, which has impacted fishing. Try fishing salmon roe behind a spin-and-glow during the incoming tide. As the water recedes, fishing is expected to improve.
    • Reminder: The Ship Creek youth-only Fishery is on Saturday, June 15, from 6a.m. to 11p.m. from the upstream side of the C Street bridge to the downstream side of the Bridge Restaurant.

Rainbow Trout/Dolly Varden/Arctic Char

  • Spawning closures are in place for Campbell and Chester creeks. Both creeks closed to all sport fishing on April 15 and will remain closed through June 14 to protect spawning rainbow trout.
  • Fishing will be good when Campbell and Chester creeks open to fishing on June 15. Try casting small spinners or streamers in deep holes near Taku-Campbell Park or Dowling Road.

Local Lakes

  • Most lakes in the Anchorage area have been stocked and some lakes have received a second stocking.
  • Rainbow trout fishing has been excellent at Cheney, Delong, Jewel, and Taku-Campbell lakes. Try slowly stripping wet flies or fishing bait under a bobber during the morning or the evening.
  • If you have canoe or kayak, fishing Sand Lake can be very productive for Arctic char and rainbow trout.

Special Species Information

Northern Pike

Northern pike are not native to Anchorage area lakes. Lower Fire Lake was treated for pike in the fall of 2022, and all pike were eradicated. If you catch a pike in any Anchorage area lake, do not release it and immediately report it here.
