The Ecosystems
586,412-square miles, 34,000 miles of tidal shoreline, 3 million lakes, countless rivers, and multiple mountain ranges form a rich mosaic of landscapes -- some 32 different “ecoregions” in all – which serve as year-round or seasonal havens for fish and wildlife. Many of these habitats are found nowhere else in the United States and some occur very few places in the world.
