Freshwater Fishing

  • A Youth-Only king salmon fishery (15 years or younger) will take place this Saturday, June 15 from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Eklutna Tailrace. The area open to youth-only is from the mouth of the Tailrace to the pedestrian bridge. Please be respectful to our youth in this area during this time and leave this designated area open for the kids. The remainder of the tailrace is open for all anglers.
  • The Eklutna Tailrace is producing a few king salmon catches as of yesterday morning at the mouth of the fishery. Remember to purchase your 2024 king salmon stamp along with your license for this fishery. You can record your catch with the new mobile app. Bait and multiple hooks are allowed in this fishery and it’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Northern Pike:
    • For road-accessible pike fishing, try the Nancy Lake Recreation Area lakes, Big Lake, Long Lake near Willow, Memory, and Prator Lake.
    • Boat-accessible pike fishing can be found in the side sloughs of the Deshka River, Alexander Creek, Fish Creek (Kroto Slough), and Hewitt Lake.
    • For fly-in pike fishing try Alexander Lake, Shell Lake, Eightmile Lake, Trapper Lake, Flathorn Lake, and Sucker Lake.
  • Rainbow Trout
    • Parks Highway streams from Willow Creek north to Talkeetna River have been blown out from recent rainfalls. If you are looking for places to camp, check out the mouth of Willow Creek and Montana Creek, or Susitna Landing on the Kashwitna.
    • This is a good time to try lake fishing while we wait for the rivers to clear up. Check out the Alaska Lake Database for a wild or stocked lake near you.
    • Anglers are reminded that flowing waters in the Palmer-Wasilla Zone are CLOSED to all fishing until June 15. This includes Cottonwood Creek off Seward Meridian as well as Lucille creek.
    • Many flowing waters along the Parks Highway are catch-and-release ONLY for rainbow trout until June 15.
    • Deception Creek is closed to fishing until June 15.
