Ship Creek Closed to All Sport Fishing through July 13

(Anchorage) – In favor of protecting king salmon and future fishing opportunities, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is implementing a sport fishing regulation change on Ship Creek. Effective 6:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29 through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, Ship Creek is closed to sport fishing from its mouth upstream to a cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant Dam.

Ship Creek will reopen to sport fishing at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, July 14. When the creek opens back up to sport fishing there will be no retention of king salmon allowed for the remainder of the year.

“Due to poor stream survey conditions and our inability to fully assess the amount of king salmon that are above the fishery, it is necessary to close sport fishing for the next couple of weeks to ensure we meet our broodstock needs at the hatchery,” stated Area Management Biologist Brittany Blain-Roth. “Sport fishing has been slow on the creek and if the fish don’t show up late, we could jeopardize future returns to Ship Creek.” ADF&G staff will continue to monitor escapement as king salmon return to the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery.
