KIDS-ONLY KING SALMON FISHERY OPEN ON CAMPBELL CREEK THIS WEEKEND

On Saturday, June 24, and Sunday, June 25, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day, a portion of Campbell Creek will be open only to kids 15 and younger to fish for king salmon.  The open area of Campbell Creek is between Dimond Boulevard and the Old Seward Highway. This is the second year for this youth-only fishery, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is expecting another good turnout.

Bait and multiple hooks may be used. Kids don’t need a fishing license or king stamp, but they do need a free Harvest Record Card, available where licenses are sold, so they can immediately record their harvest of any king that is 20 inches or longer. The daily limit for kings 20 inches or longer is 1 per day, 1 in possession. These kings “count” toward the annual limit of 5 king salmon 20 inches or longer. The daily limit for kings under 20 inches is 10 per day, 10 in possession. Campbell Creek is closed to fishing for other species of salmon at this time.

Kids may also find rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in the creek. Daily limits for rainbows are 2 per day, 2 in possession, only one may be 20 inches or longer, and the daily limits for Dolly Varden are 5 per day, 5 in possession, any size.

While many adults take advantage of this weekend to take a kid fishing, this section of Campbell Creek is closed to fishing, including catch-and-release, for all anglers 16 and older during this time. The ADF&G Mobile Aquatic Classroom will again host free educational activities at the Taku-Campbell Lake parking lot off of 76th and King Street. ADF&G staff and volunteers from Alaska Flyfishers will also be on the creek to help kids refine their fishing technique.
