ADF&G “Salmon in the Classroom” Ice Fishing Events Scheduled for Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Elementary School Classes-CANCELED

(Soldotna) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Sport Fish Aquatic Education Program has canceled its annual ice fishing events on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 25 and 26, at Sport Lake in Soldotna. This decision was made due to the warm weather which is expected to be the same throughout the weekend. This has created unsafe conditions for large groups of students and volunteers and will likely worsen with the forecasted weather conditions. The safety of the students, teachers, parents, and volunteers is of the utmost importance.

Approximately 400 students were registered to attend the events. ADF&G takes pride in teaching peninsula students about ethical angling practices and ice safety, which includes when not to go out on a lake and the potential dangers. Unfortunately, the latter is the lesson this year.
