(Anchorage) – In favor of protecting coho salmon and future fishing opportunities, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is implementing a sport fishing regulation change on Ship Creek. Effective 12:01 a.m. Saturday, August 24 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 30, 2024, Ship Creek is closed to sport fishing from its mouth upstream to a cable 100 feet downstream of the Chugach Power Plant Dam.

“Only 181 coho salmon were counted during a survey of Ship Creek near the hatchery on August 19,” stated Area Management Biologist Brittany Blain-Roth. “Typically, on average, we count around 800 coho salmon in the same section of creek during this week, and at this point every coho salmon counts.” ADF&G staff will continue to monitor escapement as coho salmon return to the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery, but the department does not anticipate relaxing restrictions during the remainder of the coho salmon run.
