Yellow-billed Loon Management and Research

Management

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is responsible for the management of yellow-billed loons. This species is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The State of Alaska is involved in the conservation and management of the yellow-billed loon. In 2006, the State of Alaska and USFWS, along with other Federal agencies and the North Slope Borough, developed a Conservation Agreement for yellow-billed loons in northern and western Alaska. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is a part of the Alaska Migratory Bird Co-Management Council, which develops recommendations for subsistence harvest of birds in Alaska.

Research

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is currently providing funding for a study examining the habitat preferences of yellow-billed loons on the North Slope of Alaska.

US Fish and Wildlife Service conducts aerial surveys for yellow-billed loons in an attempt to determine population size and breeding habitat preference. For more information visit the USFWS Loons/Grebes Projects page.
