Public Comments Due November 4 for Kachemak Bay, Fox River Flats Critical Habitat Areas Management Plan

(Juneau) — The management plan for the Kachemak Bay and Fox River Flats Critical Habitat Areas is up for revision—and the public is invited to help out.

As part of an effort to better protect and preserve habitat values while allowing compatible uses, the Department of Fish and Game is seeking public scoping comments through November 4. The department hopes to learn more about how individuals use these areas and gather feedback about the current management plan, management actions, and whether changes should be made.

The Fox River Flats Critical Habitat Area was created by the Alaska State Legislature in 1972, followed by the Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area in 1974. The current management plan, adopted in 1993, directs the department's land management activities. The plan does not address fish and wildlife harvest activities which are overseen by the Board of Game and Board of Fisheries.

Once created, a draft revised plan will be released to the public for review and comment.
