Alaska Chinook Salmon Symposium

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) will hold a Chinook salmon symposium in Anchorage October 22 – 23. The two-day symposium, “Understanding the Abundance and Productivity Trends of Chinook Salmon in Alaska,” will feature scientific presentations and public and panel discussions involving a wide variety of experts from private, state, federal, and academic backgrounds. The goal is to further identify and discuss gaps in our knowledge about Alaska’s Chinook salmon stocks and the research needed to better address these information needs.

The symposium, which is open to the public, begins at 8 a.m. in the LaPerouse Hall at the Egan Center. For those unable to attend in person, the symposium will be broadcast to Legislative Information Offices and available on the web at: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=chinook_efforts_symposium.information. Audio can be accessed toll-free at: 1-888-655-9647.

ADF&G recently completed a document entitled “Alaska Chinook Salmon Knowledge Gaps and Needs” (draft gap analysis) The draft gap analysis is the result of ADF&G’s initial efforts toward developing a comprehensive Chinook research plan. Details on the symposium and the draft gap analysis can also be found on ADF&G’s website at the link above.

Written comments on the draft gap analysis are welcome and may be submitted until November 9 via email at: dfg.chinookanalysis.comments@alaska.gov . Comments and input from the symposium and comments submitted on the gap analysis will be considered in finalizing the research plan.
