Denali Highway Hunters: Be Prepared for Nighttime Road Closures

(Cantwell) — Hunters, anglers, berry pickers and others planning to visit the Denali Highway this weekend and early next week should be prepared for 12-hour-long nighttime road closures, according to the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

Closures are scheduled for September 9, 11, and 13, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and will occur on the highway's west end at Mile 131, about four miles east of Cantwell. During the day, one lane will be kept open to traffic.

The 135-mile-long, mostly gravel Denali Highway extends from Paxson to Cantwell, connecting the Richardson Highway on its east end to the Parks Highway on its west. The highway traverses Game Management Unit 13 and is used by many hunters seeking access to the Nelchina caribou herd and area moose, bear and small game. More than 8,400 Tier I registration caribou hunt permits, some 5,000 caribou drawing hunt permits, and 1,000 community subsistence hunt permits were distributed this season to Unit 13 hunters.

For more information on the scheduled road closures, please contact Caitlyn Frye at (907) 451-5307 or visit the DOT&PF construction webpage at http://www.alaskanavigator.org/projects/denali-highway-flood-repairs
