Hunting Conditions

This permit is valid for the taking of one (1) cow OR calf moose in Unit 14A; or one (1) bull in 14B as specified by the Area Biologist. The department requests that hunters do not shoot a cow that is accompanied by a calf. Moose may only be taken with a 10 or 12-gauge shotgun with slugs, crossbow, or by bow and arrow only. You must have completed basic hunter education to participate in this hunt and if you choose to hunt with bow and arrow or a crossbow you must also have the appropriate weapons certification, in addition the to the hunter education requirement. The department currently has collared moose in the hunt area. It is legal to harvest these animals, however data provided by them is important and the department asks hunters to avoid taking these collared animals. If you do take a moose that has a collar, you must notify the department when and where you took it and you must return the collar to a Fish & Game office.

SEASON: Actual hunt dates will vary based on the time frame you were selected. See your harvest ticket for assigned hunt dates.

HUNT AREA: Hunt areas will be assigned at the time of issuance. Hunt area may be reduced due to department management priorities.

SPECIMEN REQUIREMENT: Lower 5-inch section of jaw.

LAND OWNERSHIP: This is a limited hunt and will occur within the boundaries of GMU 14A and 14B. Much of the area, especially along the roadways is in private ownership. If there is a question about ownership, contact the Mat-Su Borough or DNR Division of Lands. Hunting will not be allowed within the city limits of Palmer or Wasilla - the Palmer-Wasilla Management Area. **GET PERMISSION TO HUNT ON PRIVATE LAND!**

BEFORE THE HUNT: Read through your permit and be familiar with the dates and location the permit is valid for. SIGN THE BACK OF YOUR PERMIT - the permit is not valid unless you sign it.

* You must call the AWT Dispatch 907-352-5401 before heading to your hunt area on the days you will be hunting.

ON THE HUNT: You must wear your "hunt specific" orange vest to identify you as a legal hunter; and carry your hunting license and the signed field portion of the permit with you.

AFTER THE KILL: Punch out the date on the field portion of your permit before you gut or move the animal. Evidence of sex must remain naturally attached to part of a rear quarter to show the sex of the animal, until the animal is processed for human consumption. Salvage all edible meat. UNLESS SPECIFICALLY TOLD OTHERWISE YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REMOVING THE ENTIRE MOOSE INCLUDING THE GUTS AND GUT CONTENTS, BONES, AND HIDE FROM THE AREA.

* You must call the AWT Dispatch @ 1-800-811-0911(907-451-5100 for non-907 phone numbers) when you have successfully harvested an animal.

All hunters, successful and unsuccessful, must return their hunt report and issued orange vest to the Fish & Game office in Palmer within 5 days of the completion of your hunt. Successful hunters must also bring in the entire moose head.

All other hunting regulations must be complied with, including do not shoot on from or across the drivable surface of the road. Hunters should expect that DPS Wildlife Troopers and DFG Peace Officers will be conducting spot checks to ensure hunters are complying with permit conditions and are conducting themselves in a safe, ethical, and legal manner.
