Reader Training

Understanding Chinook salmon scale growth patterns is a skill that is developed over time (Morison et al. 2005). Scale age estimation skill is acquired by practice and experience with diverse growth patterns. Training includes studying scale growth patterns, preferably from known-age fish, and examining scale patterns with experienced scale readers. Training benchmarks are achievable measures of age estimation precision. Experienced readers should train periodically to maintain, improve, and update scale pattern knowledge and skills.
