Skagway king salmon trolling
Description
Skagway-based anglers will find good king salmon trolling in Taiya Inlet June through August. In June and July, the main stock is adult kings returning to Pullen Creek, where up to 250,000 hatchery-reared smolt are released each spring. In August, immature kings from all over southeast Alaska come to feed in Taiya Inlet.
Shore-based anglers may have success fishing from points in Taiya Inlet such as Yakutania Point and Dyea Point.
Tackle
Most sport trollers use herring trailed behind a flasher or dodger with a downrigger or other device to take the bait down to depth. Others use artificial lures such as hoochies, spoons, or spinners.
Getting There
Skagway is accessible from Canada by the Klondike Highway, or from other southeast Alaska ports by the Alaska Marine Highway System ferries. The small boat harbor is downtown and has launch ramps for trailered boats. Charter sport fishing boats operate from the small boat harbor May through September.
