Freshwater Fishing

• Saltery sockeye are continuing to come in, but the run typically winds down around now. In the last several years, fish have continued to come in the river through early September. There are quite a few pinks in the river now, so you may have to sort a little to find the sockeye.
• The Pasagshak sockeye run continues to stay steady as well and most reports indicate that fishing is pretty consistent with each tide.
• There haven’t been many reports of coho yet, with just a few seen or caught here and there. Everything seems to be late this year, so it’s not entirely unexpected.
• Pinks have really showed up in the last week with lots of bright fish in the Buskin, Olds and off the Chiniak beaches.

Saltwater Fishing

• King salmon fishing continues to be exceptional, though the really small kings (<5lbs) seemed to have showed up again in the last couple days. Many folks mentioned catching 30+lb fish last week near the Fingers.
• Coho are also around in decent numbers, though seemingly less than last year. Most effort seems to be at the Fingers, with some in the Chiniak area as well.
• Halibut and lingcod fishing seems to be a little slower in the last week, though many people seem to have shifted to focusing on salmon.
• Rockfish are being caught in most areas of Chiniak Bay and beyond. See the emergency order below for more info for nonresident limits.

  • The use of a deepwater release mechanism is required on all sportfishing vessels in Alaska and they must be used to release rockfish back down to a depth of capture or 100 feet, whichever is shallower. Ever heard of the deepwater release? Check out our webpage for more info.

Local Lakes

For a quick adventure to a slightly remote lake, consider Dolgoi Lake on Long Island. There is excellent rainbow trout fishing and it’s a short boat ride from town. There is an extensive trail network on the island and the lake is just a 5 minute walk from the beach.

Emergency Orders

Please review the emergency orders and advisory announcements below in their entirety before heading out on your next fishing trip.

• Emergency Order 2-RS-4-58-22 increases the bag limit for sockeye salmon in the Saltery River to 10 per day.
• Emergency Order 2-RS-4-42-22 reopens the Buskin River drainage for sockeye salmon fishing.
• Emergency Order 2-RF-4-16-22 reduced the nonresident rockfish bag and possession limits on the eastside of Afognak and Kodiak islands from Big Fort Island near Shuyak Island to Dangerous Cape on Kodiak Island. This emergency order is in effect through 11:59 pm. Saturday, December 31, 2022.
