Birch and Chena lakes have been recognized among the 2016 Top 100 Family Places to Boat and Fish in the U.S., according to Take Me Fishing™, whose Top 100 list includes locations in 29 states.
The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation’s (RBFF) Take Me Fishing™ campaign initiated the nationwide vote to provide families and outdoor enthusiasts with a recommended list of the best family-friendly places to experience the joys of boating and fishing.
Birch Lake, located at mile 306 Richardson Highway, was ranked number 56 in the Top 100 list. The Birch Lake State Recreation Site has 17 spaces for motorhomes and 5 tent camping sites. Sitting benches, fireplaces, and tables are available for day use. A boat ramp makes launching easy. Birch Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, Arctic char, and king salmon making fishing great fun.
Chena Lake, ranked number 79 in the Top 100 list, is located off Laurance Road near North Pole. Amenities include volleyball courts, horse shoe pit, playground, picnic sites, covered pavilions, changing rooms/warm up buildings, two designated swimming areas with sandy beaches, camping sites, boat rentals, two fishing docks, and a boat launch. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game stocks rainbow trout, silver salmon, Arctic char, and king salmon in Chena Lake.
