Juneau- The Alaska Department of Fish and Game would like to remind anglers that the upper portion of Taku Inlet remains closed to the retention of king salmon through June 14th, 2014. The closed area consists of the waters of Taku Inlet north of a line extending from Cooper Point to the mouth of Dorothy Creek (see attached map).
The closure area is implemented when the preseason forecast of Taku River King salmon does not show a surplus of fish sufficient enough to surpass escapement goals and traditional harvests. This surplus of fish is called an “allowable catch”. In years when there is no allowable catch of Taku River king salmon, in the waters north of a line from Cooper Point to the mouth of Dorothy Creek, king salmon may be taken only from June 15 – April 15.
The regulation corresponding with this announcement is 5 AAC 47.021(e)(2).
